THE TRAIL MAINTAINER

Roger Merchant

Fording swollen rivers while fighting off swarms of Maine black-flies doesn’t exactly sound like a walk in the woods. To Roger Merchant however, it’s his legacy. For over 40 years, he’s been volunteering with the Maine Appalachian Trail Club to remove "blow down trees" and keep his 3 mile section of the Trail clear for through-hikers and families enjoying the Maine outdoors. At a spry 74, he still goes out every spring, summer, and fall to give back to his community. He’s a true everyday hero, found in the middle of the woods.
